Oh I am dying right now. This is fantastic and I can’t wait to read this closing chapter to the Ascendance Trilogy.

When will the cover be released? Will we get to read more from this world, even just with spin-offs?

I thank you, Miss Jen, but please reveal the release date and synopsis. I am looking forward to read this installment.

        OMG, a spinoff.

I am so honored that some Facebook pages used the pictures of the three covers that I edited and combined as one earlier!

        Thanks a lot.

I apologize for repeatedly asking the release date earlier.

I didn’t see it because my eyes were immediately drawn tot eh cover.

It’s so beautiful. It even exceeds the previous two cover.

        Jennifer,
Just a little recommendation, I think hailee steinfeld would be a perfect imogen. She is 16 and looks just how I imagined her to look

Thanks – that’s a name I had in mind too for Imogen – Hailee defnitely has the right look!

          • October 13, 2013, 9:31 pm

But the real question is, does Imogen end up with Jaron in the end…??? I know I’m not the only one who’s freaking out about this. Hints???

          • October 14, 2013, 4:32 am

You’re totally right, Grace – you aren’t the only one freaking out about this. 😉

Actually, I pictured Imogen to look a lot more humbler. But I’ll be happy with anyone as long as they have the right character! (:

I just started reading the series. Can’t wait for the third book! Both books had me on the edge of my seat!!! I’m really happy about Roden and Jaron in the end of the second book. ^-^

Jaron, the reason I chose that name for my hero is because I once knew a boy with that name. He was such an awesome kid I always thought if we had royalty in this country, he would be a prince. So when it came time to name my prince, I knew he had to be named Jaron. I’ll bet you are just as awesome! Good luck on your presentation!

    Hi Jen,

My 4th grade class was so excited to find this on your website today! We read the False Prince as well as the Runaway King and they have been bugging me ever since for the title and release date of the third book! We love the tag line on each of the books, as well as the broken items. We have been trying to foreshadow what the broken key might mean. As a teacher, I would like to thank you for writing a book that my entire class has been able to enjoy together. They voted it their favorite book of the school year! 🙂

OMHJ!(Oh My Holy Jaron)The cover looks awesome. Why do I have to live in England? The UK covers are pathetic compared to these.
Fight for the future…Die for the throne that just killed me inside.
I think my mum might hate you a little bit because instead of studying for my ever moving closer GCSEs i’m surfing the internet for any hint on whats going to happen whoops!
Can’t wait to see how Jaron resolves it all.

P.S Congrats on creating the most awesome love triangle of all time I have a favorite(Amarinda shes awesome)but I don’t hate Imogen I actually really like her.

Thanks Skye – I haven’t seen the UK cover yet but I actually really love those too. Apologize to your mum for me – but tell her at least you’re reading and not out partying, right? So keep your fingers crossed that Jaron *can* resolve so much trouble. And we’ll see which of the two girls will accept him by the end – if any!

For good or bad, Imogen’s fate will be decided in Book 3. And yes, Gelyn did betray Carthya, but Amarinda is not from there. She’s from Bymar, which is next to Gelyn. She and Jaron are still betrothed. Good thinking though!

I knew it was going to be Red!! Love the cover The Shadow Throne .. So ominous the Key was a bit of a suprise when I saw the word Throne but I think it will make a lot of sense it could be a key involving Imodgen everyone seems to know about those two… Or it could be a the key to his royalty either way it will fit Ha fit because it’s a key! (: Wasn’t planning that one that background looks very nice love the shade of the Red.

P.S Poor Sage / )Everything of his seems to break crowns , Daggers , keys… Good thing he’s so smart…. And cute

absoutly I love Sage’s personality ! His Charecter is so solid and everyone really has their own voice(: Sage is one of my favorite male characters for books He has some good comebacks especially to Connor .And Connor was such a Villain yet it seemed very realistic not just like a guy with a cape evil laughing but A real villain who has a motive . Oh and the Imagery … I have to repeat Imagery to other people when I read it.. And the Boys they certainly had character buildup and changed their relationships with jaron. Sorry I get very talkive with books And you already know all of this because you wrote the series(:
P.s I think it’s really awesome you Take the time to reply to comments it really makes my day.

I love writing Sage too – he often surprised me with the things he says or even the things he might do. And Conner was a blast too – such a horrible person, but for some good reasons. Writing someone in that gray area is really fun.

I walked into the classroom today and the only thought in my head (at 8:30 in the morning) was, “When can I get my hands on a computer? I NEED to check the blog RIGHT NOW!”
At nine o clock, we got to use the computers to do a book list of books we wanted to read (The Shadow Throne is on there). So of course, instead of doing the project, I sneaked on to this website very fast and stared at the cover, for like, five minutes, amazed that the cover came out so good.
Finally, I couldn’t hold my tongue any longer so I ran to the teacher and told her about this website. She showed it on the board.
So of course, I spent the second half of writing helping people get on the site.
I can’t believe it how cool the cover was! So I was right about it being red and starting with “the”.
I have been typing this for 22 minutes now. Mostly because I deleted the first post.
If it is coming out on March First, it’s coming out in 261 days, 1 hour, 4 minutes, and forty seconds as of 17:25:22 6/13/13. I like doing things down to the second.
I can’t wait until it is out! I will definitely pre-order it on amazon.
    Sincerely,
    Tori
PS. thank you for posting the picture of all 3 books together. I love the cover! What is the first sentence? And please tell me: does Jaron die? I don’t like it when my favorite characters die! 🙂

Well I can’t tell the sentence exactly, but I can give you a few hints: there are words in it, many of which contain vowels. It also is a sentence that gets us started with the plot. 😉

I finally have the courage to write on your block, Mrs. Nielsen! I’m so exited about the title and the cover; I just had to write to all my friends an email, adding the link of this block. I hope that they will spread the word around about The Ascendance Trilogy, so that more people will know about it and read it, and not go, “What’s The Ascendance Trilogy/The False Prince/The Runaway King/ The Shadow Throne?”. Ha-ha. 😉

I love the title. I have so many predictions about what it means, because while ‘The False Prince’ gave us a little clue about Conner’s cruel plan, and, ‘The Runaway King’ gave us an idea of Jaron fleeing away from the country, away from the danger (which doesn’t really suits his personality, but I just had a very wild guess). I think ‘The Shadow Throne would mean either (Just my guesses)
    A) Jaron will have help from some unknown country,
or B) Someone (I have in mind who, but I’m not gonna voice who I have) from Jaron’s friends is a secret spy or another ruler from some other (magical) country and they will help him, but first, of course, he will get mad at them for hiding the secret. 🙂

As for the symbol, it could mean a key to the end of the war or the key to the Carthya’s treasures. Or, my wild, wild wild, guess, a key to a jail cell, where Imogen is kept as a prisoner!

Anyway, I’m extremely excited about the third book of my most favorite series, so Thank You Mrs. Nielsen, for giving us this amazing, in a new far, far away land, an adventurous story, in which we enjoy following our favorite characters steps, view their choices in dangerous situations, and laugh and cry with them. (I actually cried and laughed at the same time, when I learned of Sage’s history and of what happened to his family in the first Book.)

    Sincerely,
    One Of Your Awesome Fans,
    Irina

PS. If you don’t mind me asking, How did you come up with the names of the characters and the villages and the countries and the towns? They’re so beautiful, and I think none of them are real, like the countries and the villages and the towns. The character have some real names, some don’t, I think.
    Thank you.

Thanks Irina, I’m so glad you wrote me! Thanks for spreading the word – that is a huge compliment and I appreciate it very much.

Those are great guesses – not too much longer now and you can know if any of them are correct.

To your question, most of the people names I came up with were the same as how parents choose names for their babies – go through baby name books and look for something that feels right. Place names I just made up out of my head. I tried to vary the letters they started with and the number of syllables, just to make it easier to remember.

There are a couple of names with meanings. I once knew a kid named Jaron who was completely awesome, and I used to think if our country had royalty, that this kid would be a prince. Sage is the kind of name I figure Jaron would choose when on his own. It’s earthy sounding, a little less cultured sounding, and definitely not a name one would associate with royalty. Conner is so named because he is a con-man. Fink is because that’s what he did.

Raw potato does help with burns. I got a bad burn once as a teenager and my great grandma came over with some raw potato to set on it. At first I thought it was silly and embarrassing, then after a couple of minutes I was like, hey the burn doesn’t hurt as much. The potato pulled the heat out. That experience is why that scene is in there when Jaron is burned.

    Jaron, the prince.
    Orphan, Sage is his name.

    Jaron, killed by pirates–not
Sage could keep his belongings in a small pot.
Sage, the orphan, Jaron, the prince.

One middle school reading specialist teacher in my school district read The False Prince aloud to two of her 7th grade (I believe) classes. That’s how I got hooked on it. (Whenever I subbed for her I had to read it for 10 mins.) The 6th graders were not read to. I don’t recall her having any 8th graders.

I don’t think you’re going to kill off Jaron, but the sentence to the cover makes me think twice about it. For some reason I keep on picturing Roden being stabbed protecting Jaron. I don’t know why. I am soooo excited for the book to come out! I like the shattered objects trend. The funny thing is that when i read the first book, I thought a crown was going to literally shatter, and when i read the second, i thought Jaron’s sword was going to break. I’ve now realized that they aren’t going to break and are just objects in the story. The title is real mysterious!!! I thought the title would have something to do with Jaron’s station in the war. Like: The _____ Captain or something like that, since the first two books had to do with what he was (a prince, a king), but I like The Shadow Throne way better. Thanks for reading my obnoxiously long comment!

Thanks for writing, Brinley. Yeah, I can’t share details for book 3 of course, but I love that you’ve been picturing them and imagining ideas for yourself. That probably means you’re a very creative person and maybe will end up doing some writing yourself one day. When you describe seeing scenes like movie trailers – I do that too. Best wishes –

Yeah, I do write a lot. I’m getting crazy about it, but most authors tell me in this case crazy is a good thing. 😀 I honestly can’t believe you read my comment. Seriously. IT’S HUGE! I love imagining movie trailers for books (my own and others). A lot of times I imagine Jaron’s family watching the trailer to The False Prince and seeing their reactions.

Today we had an art contest at school. I entered a picture of Sage holding the roast that he stole in the first chapter of The False Prince. I did not win but one of my classmates won and she entered a picture of the crown on the cover of The False Prince. I saw the cover of The Runaway King entered by someone in the other fourth grade class. I should have entered the key from The Shadow Throne, even though not many people have read it 🙂 . It was the last day of school and we only had an hour to draw. My other picture was way better because I probably logged 12 or 13 hours working on it, but we could not enter something we had already drawn. By the way, there are, as of June 17, 2:01:10 p.m., there are 257 days, 4 hours, 29 minutes, and 54 1/2 seconds until The Shadow Throne is published. I can’t wait until it’s published!!!!!

Me and My Friend Lexi went outside and acted out scenes from THE FALSE PRINCE and THE RUNAWAY KING, for hours. We thought we were only out there for maybe ten minutes!! So I guess all we have to do is act out scenes like that for months and THE SHADOW THRONE will be out in no time!! By then we’ll probably have the whole book memorized, and when anyone asks what THE FALSE PRINCE is about, we can just tell them to sit down and act out the whole thing! Aaaah! So excited for THE SHADOW THRONE!! I’ll just keep up with your website, and keep acting and drawing until it comes out. So excited!!!

Crisp, with fully developed characters, wry humor and a storyline that keeps you riveted, full of unexpected twist and turns that make perfect sense. the series reminds me a little Oliver Twist/The Prince and the Pauper, and I love how it also has a distinct personality of its own. I absolutely LOVE Sage/Jaron- he is a master of equivocation! I almost cried when the significance of Sage’s enigmatic golden rock was revealed. I’m wondering, though: ypu’ve said that Sage sometimes surprise you. How can this be, since the author creates the characters?
I adored the first book, and the second book was even better. Can’t wait for the final installment!!!

      *surprises*, sorry.
In other words, do characters develop spontaneously in your mind, or do you have to think through each one and consciously choose personality and other distinguishing characteristics?

      • Reply
        July 5, 2013, 5:02 pm

Ah, I see. For me, it happens both ways. For Jaron, he came to me instantly and complete. I may have consciously created his background, but his personality was just there. For some of the other characters, like Amarinda, I created the personality I wanted in her position. If you’re a writer, I assume the same is true for you, right?

sort of- I’m just starting to write fiction, and usually I know the relationships/dynamics between main characters already, but I have to plot out the details like how they met,why they like/dislike each other, etc. Keeping the action going vs. too much introspection on the main character’s part is proving a challenge

          • July 7, 2013, 5:02 am

Mindy – that is a challenging part of writing. Before writing your actual story, try just writing some practice scenes that explore those open questions, preferably ones full of conflict and challenge. Those pre-writing activities will help you find your characters and their relationships. Good luck!

Also, Jaron is in it, and probably some other characters you already know. Also, the word “the” seems to pop up on nearly every page for some reason. 😉

My sister convinced me that the third book was already available – pause for moment of shock and awe vs. heart-attack – which it isn’t. I’ll have to go tell her about it – that might be fun. However unfortunately it may be, I do very much intend to get mine from the library, but I’m fully convinced that these books are worth their weight in gold!! They’re awesome! And the second one took me all of three or four hours to read – I stayed up till two A.M. to do it because my brother was taking it away with him on the plane to wherever the following morning. Of course, that left me having nightmares about whatever would be happening to Imogen until Jaron would show up and save the day, but still . . .just kidding 😉
If Tasmia reads your books in one hour, then Tasmia should take into account that Tasmia reads really fast, or I read exceptionally slow – I’d say both.

Oh! I was just wondering are you gonna add to the trilogy after The Shadow Throne, just wondering. And I think I am also going to add comments every once and while because its just so interesting reading the other blogs and so cool righting on this blog. I have been reading the blogs for about a week and finally yesterday decided to white a comment, Oh i also agree with “Lexi” making a story of Jaron in the orphanage would be a pretty cool book.

I have also heard you are making a movie. I also can not wait for that. Now I’ve got two things too wait for. As soon as possible you should give everyone a sneak peek of the The Shadow Throne.

I f been thinking of all these different ways for book 3 too be like i am on pins and needles just thinking of it. One of the ways i thought was if Rodent didn’t kill Devlin and they tossed him with Gregor in the jail. And when they were at war when Avenia was attacking the castle and Devlin came up too Jaron with Imogen and a knife at her neck and told him too surender his army and let him kill Jaron or he wold kill Imogen and destroy his city and Jaron as well and then Jaron leaped at Devlin hit him in the hand with his sword then Devlin dropped the knife and Jaron went to hit him in the head with the blade but Vargan hit Jarons somewhat still broken leg and he fainted. When he woke up he was in his own jail but he still had the hairpin and easily broke out with it then hit one of Vargans vigils witch was not paying much atension and hit him hard with his fist then stole his sword and ran outside to find Vargan so close to stabing Rodent he took the knife he had out of his pocket chucked it at Vargan it hit his heart and he fell to the ground almost right after Vargan was killed that the armies ran off and Avenia surendered and Carthya won the war.

That my idea of it so ya, still exited for book 3 and the movie ill give you awhile to white book 3, bye, might right a bit tomorrow. 😀

    • Reply
      July 19, 2013, 3:48 am

Great question, Erik. Most of the names were just me either looking for existing names to find the right one for the character, or else making up a name solely from my imagination. The two that have the most significance are: Conner (because he is a con-man) and Jaron’s name. I once knew a boy with that name and he was such an awesome kid that I thought if we had royals, he would be one. So when it came time to name the prince, I knew it had to be Jaron.

    Mrs Nielsen,
I am going into 4th grade and I love your books! I read The False Prince and The Runaway King in 6 days-my favorite part is when I found out Sage was really the prince! I cant wait until March for The Shadow Throne. Is there any way to preorder it? Thank you

Hi Miss Jennifer, you mention it in your books that you had adopted two of Sage’s traits from your students. Did they read your books? What did they think of you doing this?

By the way, that was a fantastic cover. The words written on it suggested more troubles/problems which Jaron must conquer in order to defend his country. It’s a pity that after Jaron was finally acknowledged as King and everything seems to end well for him but alas he is faced with Imogen’s kidnapping. His life is an never ending trouble. Hope this third book would let him to achieve the happy ending which he deserved to have.

First of all, I’ll say I’m DYING to read the third book and that I’ve read The False Prince 5 times and The Runaway King 3 times and I’m not joking. That means a lot–usually I can’t read a book again not to mention 2 times or more! I have just one thing to ask: in the Runaway King, did you make the name Devlin out of the word “devil”? If you did, it was perfectly suitable for the dead pirate captain.

Hey Jen, (can I call you that)

I totally L-O-V-E love your books. I want a prequel or a sequel to the series. My 5th grade teacher like to read us books. So she said she loves this book. (she is the greatest book adviser EVER so yeah I was going to listen) Anyway she read it to us (and every time she said Jaron we would all look at this guy in my class who’s name is Jaron) and i had to read the sequel. But I totally die when i found out how it ended so just a couple days ago i looked at this blog and was like
“YES!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!” then “NOOOOOOOOO!!!” but i think i can live long enough to get the 3rd book

Day one of camping and I’m already finished the first book. Didn’t see the twists coming at all. My mother and sister recommended the book after meeting you at a book signing. Boy am I excited to read book two. My question is how in the world do you find time to respond to all your comments? Frankly I find it quite amazing. I’m a tech guy on youtube and get many emails a day and often find it hard to respond to everyone. How do you do it?

I hope you’re enjoying the camping, and yes, if you liked Book 1 please do read “The Runaway King” where for the new king, things only get worse.

On emails, if you do a lot of YouTube stuff then yes, you do understand emails. I guess I just make the time because I figure if a fan takes the trouble to find me, they deserve a reply.

      That said, I haven’t had breakfast yet. I think that’s next… 😉

    Hi!

I was wondering if during the short time Jaron spent in the castle as King.Asides from Conner,Amarinda,Roden,Tobias and Gregor, did anyone know about the close “close” friendship of Jaron and Imogen.I ask this because if there isn’t…I sense that one of Jaron’s friends is a traitor…

Awesome cover. But why is every object in the bookcovers of the trilogy always damaged?

    • Reply
      September 12, 2013, 5:29 am

Great question, Mahina! I think most people would know that Jaron and Imogen are friends, but whether Jaron has a traitor in his midst? Hmm…

And the objects are damaged because the kingdom is broken. The question is whether Jaron can repair it.

        September 18, 2013, 12:08 am

        Hi!

I was actually asking about if they knew about their romantic feelings. In THE Runaway King,Amarinda seems like the only one who knows…in fact she sounds like the traitor to me because she is a bit TOO concerned about Carthya. The part when she tells Jaron that she was befriending his enemies to find their plots wasn’t really convincing.

(Maybe the only reason I blame Amarinda is because in The False Prince it seemed like Jaron and Imogen were going to be together and that last part with Jaron and Imogen in the Runaway King was so sad.)

Question: I am making a story and I want my main character to die.My main character is narrating the story. How can I do it to make it sound not awkward? Should I change it to a second-person story?

        Thanks!

        • Reply
          September 18, 2013, 9:12 am

Okay Mahina, I understand. In Book 3, Jaron will explain his feelings for both Imogen and Amarinda, and come to understand theirs as well. I agree that in Book 2, Amarinda seems to understand there’s something between Jaron and Imogen, but even she is bound by the treaty keeping her and Jaron betrothed to each other. So yeah, the end of Runaway King is sad in that way, but it probably had to be done. If war is coming, Jaron knows he needs the alliance with Amarinda’s home country of Bymar or Carthya has no chance of surviving.

On your writing – yes, you can definitely have a main character narrator who dies. Just stay very close to their emotions at the end. Or, you can switch to another character at the end – it’s tricky but a lot of authors have done that successfully. Good luck!

Sorry about the blank comment, hit the wrong button. I’m so excited for the Shadow Throne! I hope Jaron comes out alright. I know he’s probably going to be a bit beat up though, since he’s Jaron. The cover looks so amazing! I think the key represents Imogen’s dungeon key, and the title…. that one’s a bit harder. I originally thought, when I first saw the title, that the Shadow Throne was the throne of Avenia, since Avenia’s throne is unstable and the only reason it isn’t overthrown is because the people are afraid of Vargan. It’s a “Shadow” because it’s not substantial, and neither is a shadow, and because the throne’s ruled with darkness. I may or may not be right. Chances are the title has a deeper meaning. I’m so excited to see what happens in the third book! I am dying to read it! Seriously, I might faint when I get my hands on it. You should’ve seen my reaction when I got the Runaway King at my book fair. 😀 Take your time with it though. Does anyone else besides me just sit down and play a trailer of the False Prince or Runaway King over and over again in their head? Or listen to the audiobook 600 times over to try to satisfy the need for more of Jaron’s awesome personality? You did an amazing job with this book series, Jennifer!

That looked way shorted when I typed it up! I swear! In a shorter version:
I think the title has to do with the throne of Avenia (because it’s dark and unsubstantial, like a shadow).
I think the key is to Imogen’s dungeon.
I love your books Jennifer and listen to/read them almost every day!!! I can’t wait for the third book! I seriously might faint when I get my hands on it. You should’ve seen me when I found the Runaway King in my book fair last year. I started screaming and jumping up and down and hugging the book like it was my long-lost brother. My friend just stared at me like I was growing ears out of my head.
Jaron rules (literally and figuratively). I hope he comes out alright! If he dies I will cry for at least a week, but I don’t think he will.

I just let off the loudest squeal I think I woke my mum up, woops! I’ve just finished the second book and I’m jumping out of my seat right now for the third book, I just can’t wait! This is an awesome series you’ve written Jennifer, keep going! It’s pretty sweet that they’re making “The False Prince” into a screenplay, though I’m a bit nervous of how it’ll go! I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Thanks for writing this fantastic series!

(I think all of my sentences ended in “!”… I’m just too excited. I’m fourteen and I was wondering if you had any book/series suggestions, as I have a hard time finding a good read. I particularly like books set back in time, like the Ascendance Trilogy, and things with mystery and suspense. I’m not too fussy with the time period, in all honesty. Sometimes I like a bit of supernatural stuff to spice things up too!)

    Hey Jennifer,

I’m thinking of starting a blog in a couple days, and I am going to put a section for readers so they can find good books and when different books in the series comes out or when the movie comes out. In that section, the first books that will be placed in the suggestion area is The False Prince. Just FYI, and You are also my top #1 female authors. I also heard that if you read good books, then you will be a better writer. I read your books ever month to help me with my book. Thanks for writing really awesome, good books. 🙂

If this is really the author of the books, I just read The Runaway King and I thought it was great. It wasn’t till the end of the book I realized that it would have a sequel and that there was also a book that came before it. I used this book for a project in Honors Comp/lit 9th grade. I came across it in my library at Central High school where we had to choose a fiction book. I feel ashamed however that I picked it because it had a sword on the cover but when I started to read, it was hard to stop. I really like it and think you an artist of books. I’m in 9th grade by the way. I am an artist myself both in writing and drawing. Any advice? Please respond to this by email skilarbabcock@gmail.com because I’m not sure if I’ll return to this site. I can’t wait for the next book. Where there be any romance? I hope so. I love Romance/Adventure in those times. Modern day romance is so dull. I hope you respond and I hope that this book will be very successful! Thank you for your time.

Hey, Skilar, this is the author. I think it’s funny you started with The Runaway King – that was probably a bit confusing. But I’m glad you enjoyed it. I love that you’re artistic both with writing and drawing – if you’re serious about your art, then start looking at it the way an artist does. Why does a particular book work, or not? What are the details that set an ordinary painting apart from an extraordinary one?

Also, if you’re so inclined, watch this speech by author Neil Gaiman. Everyone should watch it, but artists especially: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikAb-NYkseI

I can’t really say what’ll happen in the third book, but you’re not alone in hoping to see some romance.

When my friend told me you had replied her post I was so shocked. I am so happy I got to read your books. I was bored one day and found this website that had the cover for the false prince and a short description. Up to today my friends and I are still wondering why I spent so much time web stalking the book. I waited for it for nine months, not reading any sneak peaks, nada just waiting. I don’t know what it was but when I finally got the book, I read it twice, which is a shocker for me. I’ve never done that with any book, EVER! (note did not sleep through out saturday, the first time I read it) On Sunday I sent the book to my friends, note that I had not told them a single thing about this book or my web stalking, and the next day, when we saw each other, we were screaming like crazy through the halls. People were looking at us like we were crazy, and we were! Crazy in love! We have stalked this series since then and it never gets old. We are african americans, born and bred in the us for the first few years of our lives and currently residing in Nigeria now. Up to today, when we discuss with friends about our favourite books we still shriek at the thought of the false prince. And when people ask we go “Girl, do we have a story for you”. Thank you for this book and for what ever magic you cast on me to stalk it.

    • Reply
      October 7, 2013, 2:04 am

Thank you! The idea for Jaron came from a song called “Guaranteed” by Eddie Vedder. A line in the song says “I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me, guaranteed.” And I thought that was the character I had been looking for, someone who knew exactly what game he is playing, but the other characters don’t know the rules are being quietly rewritten.

I love the ascendance trilogy, Ms.Nielson! I love the stupid things Jaron does, ending up benefitting everyone else. I was so excited when I heard the Runaway king was coming, so every week I would drag my mom to Barnes and Noble. When it finally hit the stores, I kept rereading those two books. Now, you’ve got me psyched up for the Shadow Throne which is coming up before my birthday. My parents told me they’re going to buy it for me. Jaron has a knack for getting under people’s skins and I love how his audience reacts to it. I cant wait till you post the first chapter or something. If you reply to me, that will be so cool. If you could, or rather want to, I should say, you can contact me at tmarvine4816@gmail.com. I love your books and I think your awesome! Now PLEASE don’t take this the wrong way ( I’m a writer at heart, so I naturally have the ability to offend people without realizing it or meaning to) but are you really thinking about making a fourth book? Lots of people make fourth books to a trilogy and it’s super depressing watching the character grow up. Or to see how things have changed for the worse over a 30 year period. But whatever you do, I’ll still be your biggest fan. Really. Your BIGGEST fan. Don’t listen to all those other book obsessees.

Often, fan fiction comes from writers asking, “What happens next after..” or else a missing scene (writing something that happened in the story “off-screen.” Or choosing a favorite character and expanding their story from what is written. Good luck!

I LOVE YOUR BOOKS! Ever since I saw The Runaway King being advertised on gaiaonline (I used to be on there) I added it to my book list. When The False Prince came up on my book list I jumped for joy! I didn’t draw a single breath before cracking it open. I read it in a week (if I was on vacation it would maybe take me an afternoon)! I am on chapter 26 (I think) of The Runaway King. SPOILER I was squirming at the branding iron part. . . SPOILER.
Anyway, Imogen. Just. . .adored by all. I LOVE her! I always imagined her to look like Mahoro in the cute maid way. Anyway, love your books, keep writing and I’ll keep reading. <3

Anyway, thank you for your opinion about my opinion on Imogen.

Jake, sometimes it can be hard to know what to write about. But the more you learn how to keep your eyes open to story ideas, the more they will come at you. Just be patient. Stay curious.

The False Prince idea came from a song (“Guaranteed” by Eddie Vedder), and a lot of my ideas originate in music. But I also play a lot of “What if” games. Like, “What if there was an alien invasion right now?” That sorta thing.

      Good luck!

    Hi Mrs. Nielsen.
Tina Marvine again! I have to do a book report on the ascendance trilogy( because it is so awesome)and I was wondering if you could answer the following questions for me?
    1) Is the King of Gelyn and/or Mendenwal going to help Carthya or Avenia in the war?

    2) Does Jaron ever lose his sword to his enemies?

    3) What time period does this happen within?

    4) How would you best describe Jaron/ Sage?

    5) Will Jaron get any more allies?

    6) Will King Vargan surrender to Jaron?

    7) Will Jaron give the position to someone and go back to being an orphan

    8) Who will fight with Jaron in the war, or will there be no war and just surrenders?
Thanks a lot Mrs. Nielsen. I thought I could show it on Monday to my class mates, it would be really cool!

I’m open to doing more books, but haven’t committed to any at this point, mostly because I haven’t found the story yet that needs to be written.

How do I feel when I write? If it’s going well, like a rush of adrenalin. If it’s not going well, like I’m trying to walk through a brick wall. Personally, I prefer the first to the second.

Pg-13 I think . . . Whatever. I was wondering, who did you publish with before you published with scholastic ( – if anyone)? I tried to talk scholastic into publishing my book for me, but apparently I have to be popular or something first ( – but I’m pretty popular already if you ask me 😉 – just kidding )

      December 5, 2013, 6:36 am

Elisabeth, I’ve also published with Sourcebooks. For Scholastic, it’s not the popularity thing because obviously you’d get in that way 😉 but they do want you to have a literary agent (as do all major publishers). So you can look at smaller publishers or else polish up your work and start submitting to agents (there’s a lot of information online about that).

You write wonderful books! There is a rare moment when you reach the end of a book and actually consider reading it again right there–I felt that way with the false prince. I have never read a character quite like Jaron before–he always keeps you guessing, and is extremely fun! I just started reading the series, and I finished book two last night at midnight! Oh my gosh, funny story. I’ve seen The False Prince around my school for about two years now and have never thought to actually read it. About a week ago, I pick up the book, read the inside cover and think, “Huh, this sounds pretty good.” So I check the book out and start reading. One period later at school, I’m fifteen chapters into your phenomenal book and I CANNOT absolutely CANNOT put it down. I finished the book around lunch the next day, stomped into the library, and dashed to ten counter. I told the librarian. “Look, I heard this is a trilogy and I need the next two books ASAP!” The librarian in turn gave me a sympathetic look, replying,”So sorry Honey, but the third book comes out next February and we don’t carry the second book here, but I can put in a request for The Runaway King from the High School.” I died inside before telling her that I’d wait to get the book from the High School. I finished The Runaway King the day it came to me from the High School….

        🙂

The False Prince hooked me so fast it quite Litterally took my breath away. The book was, by far, the most amazing that I’ve ever read, and believe me, I READ A LOT. But this book is the best. The way that the characters were developed is such an amazing journey throughout the books, and a skill I very much envy. And the relationships between the characters are so perfectly thought out and humorous I can’t help but drool over your work. I believe that the connection between Mott and Jaron is the most humorous of them all. Either Jaron and him, or Conner. I can’t quite decide yet. 😉 You have influenced me to write more than any other author has in my entire life. I’ve met the authors of tons and tons of books- Rick Riordan included- But they haven’t been as specallialy talented as you’ve been. With certain books, I’ll find myself growing bored and tired half way through the book, but yours always keep me entertained and I am honored to be reading such phenomenal work. I thank you so very much for writing these AMAZING works of art.
        😀

You may want to make another series that is connected to this one like the Warriors series. that will make people love it even more. Also so far in all my reading, i haven’t found a single book as amazing as yours, this tops every book i have read. Believe me, i have tried to find a book better than yours and i have failed. When i normally read an astounding book, i try to find a better one, but so far nothing tops yours. Hello! I am a huge fan of your books and i am very grateful because you have become a great inspiration to me. I cannot wait until the new book comes out!! Reading is a way to escape reality into an unknown world, and you have taken my mind and imagination into the next level. I am ten years old, but even so, I enjoy the suspense that you always have in your books and I just wanted to say to keep it up. I dream of becoming a writer and one day being as good as you are in making people happy with your books. I promise, I’ll be first in line at Barnes and nobles here in Hawaii to buy your books! ( and probably MANY MANY more!!)

Thank you! I am really happy. Hearing that comment made my day. And hearing it from you… wow. I don’t know what to say. I have a question, though. How did you come up with this? One of the main reasons that I don’t write much is because I lack inspiration. Could you give me a few tips on how to find it? I really look up to you and can’t wait for the next book to come out! Thank you for being a HUGE inspiration to me, and using some of your own time to write back. Have a nice day!!

Kiana – To find out what inspires you, start paying attention to what you’re doing when you do get ideas. Are you listening to music, on a walk, just laying on your bed? Once you know that, really dive into that to find your next story idea. Another thing to do is to pay attention to what makes you love a story – maybe it’s the danger, maybe it’s the type of romance, maybe it’s the humor. Get really specific on what attracts you to a story, then start with that as the thing you want to bring into your own writing. Good luck!

    Hey Ms. Nielsen,
I finally published that book of mine (Post Tantrum Strategy Detonation). . .well, one of fourteen anyway. Publicising is the protocol – and I probably spelled publicising wrong, but I don’t feel like googling the correct spelling right now, so we’ll leave it at that – and on this one website where I previewed my book for whoever happens to be nosing about, the website all but murdered my formatting . . . Oh, bother; oh, bother.

Anyhow, I again express to you how much I appreciate your work, and I’d probably read The False Prince again if not that I’m already scheduled to be reading college textbooks for the foreseeable future . . . and arguing with my adviser . . . maybe – I’ll probably read it over the summer, though.
Another anyhow – and I would try to smooth this over, but really I don’t feel like it right now, hence I’m just going to come out with it – presuming greatly that you aren’t necessarily totally busy, that you actually don’t care that much about like an hour of your free time, that you’re carying around about 2.99 on your debit card for no apparent reason, that you have a kindle app, and that you wouldn’t really rather be writing the Shadow Throne, here’s the link to amazon where you can buy my book, or just read the preview – that’d suffice: http://www.amazon.com/Tantrum-Strategy-Detonation-Tom-Tom-Files-ebook/dp/B00HI4VGEK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389494224&sr=8-1&keywords=Post+Tantrum+Strategy+Detonation

Thanks, and if you thought that was too rude, feel free to tell me – just read the preview . . .Pretty please ;)<

Hello Mrs.Neilson. If you take you time and read this then i’m very grateful.

FIrst of all i’d like to acknowledge you amazing writing skills. I love the way you make each person’s characteristic so unique, especially Jaron.(you’re so good at choosing names). I also love the way you make your stories suspenseful . My mind literally did a backflip finding out Sage was the real prince in the first book. I also like that you don’t force romance into the story because some authors do that and it’s just so cheesy. Instead you make problems for them which actually makes it interesting. We could tell from the time Sage and Imogen met they would have feelings for each other, yet you did not let them admit to each other in the first book. By the time Jaron asked Imogen if she loves him I was so tense and excited to hear her answer.

I really hope Imogen ends up with Jaron because honestly I think Jaron’s love for Amarinda would be fake. And if they developed feelings for each other, there would still be Imogen to consider because Jaron’s love for her wouldn’t flatter. We can tell he loves her more than a friend. Anyhow, it’s your book so it’s really up to you.

This might seem silly, but I don’t really know how to pronounce Imogen. I don’t know if the “g” in her name would be pronounce like a “g” or a “j”. If you can reply to this and tell me, i’d be very much appreciated.

One final word, You are such a big inspiration to me. I wanted to be a writer since I was younger. I’ve always had ideas for stories but though they was babyish.
I used to think books on kings and queens were lame, but after reading your books I realized if a person can make a book involving kings and queens and still make it interesting, then what can’t he do? I hope you know you are a big part of my book-life and my imagination.

Thank you, in reasons more than I can say and express. It would be great if you responded, thought if you don’t I completely understand. If I have offended you in any part of this, please forgive me. Thank you once again Mrs.Neilson, and I wish you the best in your next book, The Shadow King.(By the way, the cover is amazing as is the title.) I can’t wait for it to come out!!!!!!

    🙂 <3 🙂

Thanks for your post – that’s all so kind! I’m so glad you’re interested in writing, and I hope you’ll keep up with it. I also hope you’ll enjoy the way things work out in The Shadow Throne, with all the characters you love most. And for Imogen, the way I pronounce it is Im-(rhymes with him)-o-(long o like “go”)-gen-(like Jen).

      Happy reading!

This might be a silly question, but I’d mean a lot to me if you answered it. Me and my friends pronounce Imogen in different ways. A couple of us pronounce the “g” as a “j” and a couple of us as a “g”. Which one is right? and if it’s neither then can you please tell me how you pronounce it? Thank you

I picked up your first book to give to my brother on a field trip a few months ago under the impression that he’d love it. I said I’d read it first but he hasn’t read it yet. Oh well, more awesomeness for me. When I found out about Jaron I honestly couldn’t help but laugh for a moment only because that is my other brother’s name and he is pretty darn mischievous. I haven’t read but a sample of book 2 yet but only because I’m waiting for book 3 to get both at once. Me and my friend are anxiously waiting and I wish the time would go by faster.

From what I have read of The Runaway King I am currently hooked and just waiting with bated breath for the next time I could go to the store. If only my library had the book. *sigh* (And yes I’ll try to get him into it but he complained about how my copy was bent and a couple pages had that wavy effect from water damage and said he wouldn’t read it unless I got a better copy. Oh, children. Hopefully I can find another copy somewhere 🙂 )

We’re hoping to set up a Literature Circle in our classes as well based on the series. Thank you for writing these and I look forward to following your continued success.

Hello Ms. Nielsen. I have never ‘commented’ to anything before so the ‘etiqute’ here is is new to me, but I just really wanted to let you know that your Ascendance Trilogy has really impacted my daughters life.
Despite our efforts, Hailey was VERY MUCH a reluctant reader for anything other than Archie Comics, but then the librarian at her school suggested the The False Prince book to her. She brought it home, read the first page, and then didn’t put it down til it was done. She came downstairs so proud that she had finished a whole “real book” and absolutely loved it!!! She gushed on and on over the dinner table that night telling us all the details with great passion and excitement. I could have cried I was so happy for her! However, she was equally sad because she wished so much there was a second book.
Well, imagine her joy when I looked online that night and found out there are three books in the series!!! The next day she checked out The Runaway King and devoured that one tooand has since read several other novels too!!!, (now that she sees how great reading for entertainment can be!!!).

Now she agonizingly awaits the release of The Shadow Throne and is so excited about it that she is planning on using her own money to buy it because she says “it will take WAY too long for the librarian to get it and put it in the system and put that plastic protective cover on it, I can’t wait any longer than the 25th!”).

Your words and creativity have opened up a whole new world of pleasure to her. (She never knew that it was possible to be so excited about a book!!!)

I was wondering if there is any way for me to buy all 3 books from you directly (and perhaps get them autographed???) I would love to do this for her as a special gift and as keepsake to mark the begining of her love of books (a love that I hope she carries for her whole life). Perhaps she will keep them and read them to her children when they are in grade 4 like she is now.

Thank you for taking the time to read my ramble… I really think it is important to let people know when they have impacted you in such a positive way. So from one momo to another, I Thank You!

Wow, Nicole, I love this! Of all honors given to an author, this has to be my favorite, and I thank you so much for sharing this with me. You made my night.

If you would like to get her signed copies, the best way to do that is to order the books from The King’s English bookstore. When you go to check out, there is a place for you to leave comments. You can put her name there, and I can sign them, and then King’s English will ship them directly to you. I will be there the evening of Feb 25th, so they would ship the book the next day.

Warmest wishes to you and Hailey!

There is always that one thing that holds your attention and doesn’t let you put the book down. That must be really hard to achieve. I’m currently trying to write a book and even though is not going to bad is really hard. Just the simply thing of keeping your ideas in order and having to focus on the thing you are supposed to write in that moment is exhausting. I’m a bit all over the place I guess. But honestly I can’t wait!!! Thank you so much reading and for giving us, your fans, your time. Your awesome!

Sarai – Personally, I don’t believe any stories are too old. If it’s a story that grabs you, then it does. To help keep your ideas in order, you can always write an outline, or even write scenes out of order! There is no one right way to finish a book – so whatever you do figure out that works for you, that’s awesome. Keep working on that story!

Are you going to do a movie about the books?

      Maybe. He certainly hopes so.

Hey, Cami. Thanks so much for reading! To answer your questions, there is no fourth book planned right now, but it’s not impossible down the road. And Paramount is creating a screenplay right now – that doesn’t mean they will make the movie, but they’re looking at it. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

No worries – I make errors when I type on my phone too! Sometimes I silently correct grammar for others, sometimes if I’m feeling obnoxious I do it out loud. And sometimes I make grammar errors and then wonder if other people are correcting me! And yes, I do talk with other writers. I’ve met John Green once but don’t talk with him regularly. But there are many other authors who I consider great friends and I feel lucky to be in their circles.

To question #2, yep! And to question #1, this is copied from my FAQ on this site: Where did you get the idea for The Ascendance Trilogy?
Sage came to me in a song by Eddie Vedder (lead singer for Pearl Jam) called “Guaranteed.” The lyrics said, “I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me, guaranteed.” I loved those lines and the more I turned them in my head, the more Sage’s character became clear. And once I had Sage, I had the story.

      • Reply
        March 10, 2014, 12:29 am

Sage is really cool, he’s immediately become my favorite fictional boy character, Imogene my favorite girl character.

        • Reply
          March 10, 2014, 12:37 am

Actually not fictional, it’s funner believing they’re real. Especially after all they’ve gone through in your books. . . all their suffering and forced separation. Oh, and I liked what you said about creating Sage from a song, songs touch you and can inspire mood, I think that’s how Sage became developed and clear, I really like his character, how he takes risks and is super funny! I like how he calls Vargan a rotten corpse, wow, your an awesome author! Your books have made me cry and laugh (probably more cries, but of laughter to)

It took a little less than three months, which is pretty fast, but Sage was in my head pushing me to write. And yes, I’ve written several stories that either never got finished or weren’t good enough for publication.

Um, Ms. Jen? I was just wondering how you thought of all the character names. I mean, ALL of them fit the characters SUPER well, like Roden, Fink, Vargan, Imogene, Tobias, Sage . . . I could go on and on and on. Some books I’ve read have incredible plots, but the names are terrible, they didn’t fit the characters at all! And for you, even the minor characters have really good names.

    • Reply
      March 11, 2014, 3:49 am

Thanks, Alyse. I treat all my characters like real people in my head, so naming them is just part of that process – the right name for each character.

The shadow throne was amazing, but I have a few comments.
1: isn’t it weird that Imogene and jaron are getting married, at like 15?
2: Also, u have to admit, Imogene being alive is a little far fetched.
Overall all though, I loved your book. Unlike a lot of the other comments, I don’t think u should write a 4th book, because it seems as if everything has been resolved.
I can’t wait for another series!
    Thank you.

I usually start with the hook of the idea, then start looking for the right characters for that story. If I find a character that really grabs my attention, then I start to fill in all the other blanks.

Hi miss Nielsen. I have read the first and second book to the ascendance trilogy and I have to say I love your work, I fangirl about it all the time, so much my friends are like “if you would shut up about how good this trilogy is, ill reads the first one” I really admire your work and plot twists. But there were some pressing questions in my mind. Devilin fought to the death to keep his title but roden didn’t, why? And how do the pirates look at him now, for cowering to whqat they thought as a traitor? And does Jarrod really love Imogen?

      March 24, 2014, 2:11 am

Thanks for reading the books, Paige! To your first question – Roden didn’t fight to the death because Jaron finally convinced him of who he was. Once Roden believed that, and believed that Jaron wanted to bring him back to Carthya, he refused to fight Jaron anymore. The second and third questions will be answered in the third book!

hmm I see… now that I read that and re-read the passage. I’m working on my own book actually, I was wondering if you could give me some pointers as of how to develop characters, and plot. I have an idea of it but I keep having different ideas for an ending. Plus I feel my story can get redundant and its more telling the n showing. So could you help me, from one writer to a beginner?

        • Reply
          March 24, 2014, 2:34 am

Definitely! I’m so glad you’re writing. Take some time with your characters and really get to know them as if they were a new friend. Start thinking about them as if they were with you, just hanging out. What music would they like? What would they be like at school? Who would they get along with or not get along with? As you start to think about them in real ways, they’ll start to come alive in your pages! The same thing for the plot – spend time with it, make sure it’s exactly the story you want to tell. And as you write, be constantly thinking about other problems you can add, or what else is happening. The more you do this, the more the “right” ending will become clear. Don’t worry about the other stuff – too much telling, or redundancy – that’s what revision is for, and you will be doing a lot of it. All you need to do for the first draft is get to “The End.” Everything else will come together in revisions!

    Hey Jennifer,
I was looking for characters for my book, and I ran across Alex Pettyfer . . . who would make a great Jaron, I think. (And he’d make a really great ‘my character’ except . . . he wouldn’t. Which is really sad, because it’s impossible to find the right face, you know? He doesn’t grin enough, and when he does, he looks too nice. I need someone truly obnoxious, and the blonde hair is trade-mark.)

I just started reading the trilogy, and let me just say, it is so boss!!!!!!!!!!!!! I literally started the Trilogy 2 days ago and I’m already on the third book. I especially love how Jaron and Roden make up at the end of The Runaway King. I can’t wait to get started on the Shadow Throne. I admire how you trap the reader in a suspense so much that you can’t put down the book until your done with it, and then, you wish you had the other books so you can read them right after you finish it. I do believe I’ll read the trilogy again. Thanks a lot for such a good read.

    Hey Jennifer,
I promise I’ll stop posting after this. . . unless something truly interesting and to the point comes to mine . . . but probably this will be it . . .
So, first: I read the preview for The Shadow King (Yayy!!!!!!!) Looks good already . . . and the plot is already moving really fast . . . my library, on the other hand, moves exceptionally slow . . .They don’t have your book yet – at least not last I checked. Perhaps it would be in my best interest to walk up to the front desk and ask them politely. Hm . . . what a thought.
And so . . . while I’m waiting, I made me a pretty youtube video. Wanna’ see? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3LaS6s69ew
And are you thinking of writing more after the Shadow Throne book? . . . despite the logical opposition of the fact that this is a trilogy, of course.
    Ok. That’s it. (And of course, I must now smile. 🙂 ) –Thanks Jennifer. . . .

I was thinking about what a fourth book would be like for some reason. I thought that all five countries (Carthya, Avenia, Gelyn, Mendenwal, and Bymar) would have war against another area, and it would be hard because as Jaron said in the Shadow Throne, other nations had cannons, so a war would be very tough. So then, anyways, when they win Jaron would would become emperor of the five countries as Vargan had wanted for himself and he would be even more known. It just came to my head right now, but I will read THE MARK OF THE THIEF and by theway what is it about?

I hope you enjoy MARK OF THE THIEF too, Adam. There are other posts (which I think you’ve seen by now) that tell what it’s about in more detail!

So to win a free copy of THE MARK OF THE THIEF we have to have the most entries right?

No, it’s a random draw. More entries increases your odds, but doesn’t guarantee a win.

Oh ok, so is the draw tomorrow for sure?

No ideas. I’m not totaling them because it’s not about the total numbers, just how the random draw grabs its names.

Hi, I have two questions for you about publishing. First of all, did you use an agent? And second, who was your editor? (Just curious :-)) BTW your books still top my list. i haven’t found anything to match them yet!

Scarlett, I do have an agent – Ammi-Joan Paquette of the Erin Murphy Agency, and she’s awesome. I strongly believe in authors using agents – they will earn you far more than you can earn on your own, and they clear a lot of obstacles out of your way. My editor is Lisa Sandell at Scholastic, and getting to work with her is a huge honor and privilege. Once you’re published, these two relationships (agent and editor) are the most important to your career.

      And thank you very much!

I loved this book soooo much! I finished reading it like two days after I got it, which was almost right as it was available for purchase.
I am a writer, too. But not that good(I am 13, so…) I do enjoy doing it though and I must say your books inspired me the most! But I would like to ask one question: I am writing–or trying to write–a novel based upon the time of the kings and queens–and I’m throwing in sorcery as well–but I can’t come up with very good names. So far I have Seph, Mason, Darrin, Violet, Prince(I thought it was funny because the main character has a dog named Prince, so he makes his friend change his name to Jamsison…), Midas.. You get it. They aren’t the best names and they aren’t all from the time period I am writing in, but… Anyway, I was just wondering how you came up with yours. They are all so cool and unique. I love them and I can’t seem to find good enough ones to match your amazing choices. So thanks for everything! You’re an amazing author and I love your books!! 😀 I would be ever so thankful–and honored–if you help me! 😀

Actually, Lily Lu, I like your chosen names very much. If they seem right for your characters, then keep using them. I get mine from one of three places. Either 1) Because of some personal reason for using the name (like Conner is a conman). Or 2) baby name websites. You can google “medieval girl names” or something to get names from the period. But I use name websites a lot to find names. And 3) making it up. Sometimes I just combine the sounds of letters until it sounds like a name I like. Don’t be too hard on yourself about names, or whether you’re completely satisfied with your writing. You are 13 so the fact that you’re writing at all is fabulous – just enjoy the story beneath your pen and have fun!

Thanks, Ms. Nielsen! I appreciate your feedback. I think I’ve found a good name website–it helps a lot. I also found the meaning of my name on it! 😀 And sorry it took me so long to reply, i hadn’t noticed you’d responded… (3
I have only one more thing to say…
        STAY AMAZING!! 😀
