May 15 and 16 is the annual Storymakers Writers Conference. This conference is recognized for its excellence and always sells out, so you want to register early. If you do it this week, you’ll get an extra tickets to come to a meet and greet with donuts (donuts guys, DONUTS!) and several authors (including me, who could never say no to donuts). To register, go here.

I’m doubly invested in the conference this year because THE SHADOW THRONE was nominated for their Whitney Award in the Middle Grade category. Both THE FALSE PRINCE and THE RUNAWAY KING won in the past two years, and it’s a huge honor for the committee to include one of my books for the third year in a row. If you want to see the other finalists, you can see them here.

    Hello!
This is Elizabeth Call from Omaha Nebraska. I am 10 years old, I love to write, and I love your book The False Prince! I am doing a project on your book and saw that you are from Utah. I also saw that you are a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Is this true? If it is then,WOW!!!! I am also a Mormon. 🙂 It is very cool to know that a Mormon wrote this book! (I have a few questions) How long did take you write the book? How did you get the idea for writing The False Prince? Did you use anyone’s personality in your life to inspire a character in the book? Thank you so so much for your time.
    Sincerely, Elizabeth Call

Hi Elizabeth! Thanks for contacting me. Yep, I am in the Mormon club with you! 😉 Let me answer your questions:
      * It took me a little less than three months to write The False Prince, which was pretty fast. But every morning when I’d wake up, Sage would be in my head, bugging me to get going on the next scene. He’s pushy like that.
      * Sage came to me in a song by Eddie Vedder (lead singer for Pearl Jam) called “Guaranteed.” The lyrics said, “I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me, guaranteed.” I loved those lines and the more I turned them in my head, the more Sage’s character became clear. And once I had Sage, I had the story.
      * Did anyone’s personality inspire me for the book’s characters? Not really. I’m pretty mean to my characters, and I wouldn’t be able to be so mean if I was thinking about the real characters when I wrote about them.

How did I not know you were Mormon? Do you know who else is going to be there author wise? Is Orson Sott Card? I wish I could go! It sounds like tons of fun! Good luck with your book nominations!

Thanks, Savannah. I know I’m doing a panel with Brandon Mull, but I don’t really know everyone who’ll be there. I haven’t heard that Orson Scott Card is coming, though I’d geek out if he did.
