Movie Update (+ Winners)

The winners from last week’s drawing are:

*** Patience *** Mia Clement *** Jamin B *** Ambri Miller ***

If you didn’t win, there are still two more chances to enter until THE SCOURGE is released, so be sure to put your comments below!

9780545284141_p0_v2_s260x420So another six months have passed, and I know many of you are curious about any developments on the movie! Well…

As I’ve warned, it won’t be much of an update. The news is…there isn’t much news.

Another screenwriter has been brought on for continuing script revisions, so although everything continues to move forward, that script is not yet ready for Paramount to make any decision.

This means the movie is not yet green-lit, but it isn’t a no either. It’s merely a “let’s see how the script looks in six months.”

So check back in with me in February and we’ll see! Fingers crossed!

Since there isn’t enough to report on there, let me update you on all other projects that I’m working on, in order of deadlines:

HORIZON 2: The first draft is done and I’m working on rewrites. It’ll be ready long before its October deadline. Book 1 by Scott Westerfeld will come out on Dec 27, and it is SO COOL. Read more about it here.

THE TRAITOR’S GAME 1: I’ve gone through several drafts, but am currently experimenting with a major rewrite idea. If it works, it’ll take me a couple of weeks to revise. I’ll be tight on my October deadline. Also, I need to decide if Traitor’s Game is a series title, or book title. If it’s the former, then I need a book title. Hmm. You can read more about this book here.

WRATH OF THE STORM: This final book of the Mark of the Thief series has my favorite ending I’ve ever written into a book. It’s 100% completed and will be released at the end of January 2017. I’ll talk more about this book soon. Read more about it here:

SUPER SECRET PROJECT 1: All I can say now is that this is another 20th Century historical. I’ve started on the early research, but I’m not yet ready for an outline. I hope the deadline isn’t anytime soon.

SUPER SECRET PROJECT 2: All I can say about this one is that it exists. You can read more about this project nowhere. At least…not yet. 😉

So in comments below, which of these projects mentioned above do you most want to hear more about? Give me your opinion, and be entered for a chance to win one of my books!

I’m super excited about the possibility of a False Prince movie. I read the series and A Night Divided over spring break last year. I’d love to learn about your super secret projects, but I’ll wait. I need to read The Mark of the Thief. Can’t wait to meet you later in the fall. My reporter Emma is already preparing questions. #honorsstudents

Anyway i always love how you write, there’s always an attitude *ehem* “sage’s attitude” and spice that i’ve become mostly fond of! Just keep on going. Love and regards

Traitor’s Game! I want to hear all about your thinking process and the emotions involved in the decision to do a major rewrite. I believe this is exactly what readers and writers need to hear about. What ends up on the shelves is always fantastic, and as readers it is hard to imagine you had to struggle. But I feel like the process is where it is at!

    • Reply
      August 15, 2016, 5:41 pm

I can talk about that in a future blog, definitely. In this case, the rewrite is because I felt the ending was a bit predictable, and so I’m looking at changing a main chapter’s whole backstory and trying to figure out how that has reverberations throughout the plot. It’s pretty comprehensive, but I think it will pay off.

I’m most excited for your secret projects and the False Prince movie. I hope they do it justice, the more time you take with it the better. Traitor’s Game please! Definitely would like more info on what’s to be expected for this book, maybe you’ll think of an official title while talking about it 😉
Sometimes I wonder why we must suffer and wait forever to read a book that hasn’t been released yet but then I remember that for it to be amazing it has to go through lots and lots of drafts and then the wait is worth it!
Do you struggle a lot when rewriting drafts? Is there a process you follow to make it less stressful?

    • Reply
      August 16, 2016, 4:53 am

Do I struggle when rewriting? Not always – sometimes the necessary rewrite is so clear in my mind that it’s just a matter of going through the pages. But sometimes it’s like solving a jigsaw puzzle without a finished picture to look at and with half the pieces missing. The Traitor’s Game rewrite I’m doing right now is in the middle of that. I know the problem and I think I have the solution, but it’s requiring some major change ups in the last third of the story. And that’s okay – in the end it will be much stronger. But you’re right – it does take time.

I am most excited for the False Prince movie! I bought the book 4 years ago when I was 9, and I never read it until yesterday. I so regret it. The book blew my mind. The first thing I did today was check out the Runaway King at my schools Library. I hope the screenwriters stay true to the actual book, and it’s a shame you can’t contribute to the script, though the authors rarely get too. I really hope they turn it into a movie. I also would like to audition for Sage but just it getting turned into a movie would make me happy!

Hi Dylan – I’m so glad that you finally got to the book, and that you enjoyed it! So far, I think the screenwriters have stayed true to the original story – where there are differences, they are consistent with the world and the plot. For auditions, if the movie goes forward, then I think it’d be awesome if you got the chance to audition! Fingers crossed!

I’m so relieved that the screenwriters are staying consistent to the book! The book is so great, I want the movie to be very similar. And it would be awesome to audition! So far the only books of yours I have read are the Ascendance Trilogy, which I love dearly. I read it once roughly when it was released if I recall correctly, and read the series again over the past day. I am really looking forward to the movie/s and will definitely be seeing them in the cinemas, then probably buying them on AppleTV so I can watch them at home as well :D. But something that I want even more than the movies, is more information about post-The Shadow Throne stuff. Nothing big enough to write a book about, but I’m looking for answers to what happens to many of the characters which is left rather unfinished aside from Tobias/Amarinda get married and Jaron/Imogen get married. Although I have sent you a personal email detailing all of my questions 😛

Hello. I am a middle school students and I absolutely love your books so far! Last year I got recommended the Ascendance Trilogy by my brother. I don’t usually like to read unless I find a really good book and I usually never read at home. Only in school. But when I got a couple pages into the False Prince, I just couldn’t stop reading! It was all I wanted to do. When I finally got on the third book,I read for about 2-2 1/2 hours everyday just at home. I just finished the first and second book of the Mark of the Thief series and I am disappointed that my schools library doesn’t have the third book.Last year, I read the Ascendance trilogy twice and I am now reading it again. The False Prince is my number one favorite book of all time and that’s saying something considering I have troubles finding books that I like. I plan to read all of your books soon. P.S. Sorry for the really long post 🙂

Thank you very much – I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed these books. No worries on the third book of the Mark of the Thief series. That one (Wrath of the Storm) doesn’t come out until the end of January, hence, their delay in getting it! But it’s one I hope you will think was worth the wait!

    Hey,
Could you possibly put an audition link to auditions for your movie if you decide on it. I would really like to try for it. I sent you an email about it.

Can’t wait for another book. I loved The Scourge and hope there could be a spin off book where the Scourge is back. That would be hilarious

I absolutely adore the Ascendance Trilogy! I cry every time I finish reading the books! If the books do become a movie, I hope the movie is well written. I know of many books that were made into movies that didn’t turn out well. I would be extremely disappointed if the movie did not represent the book well.

Anyways, I love your books!! Thank you for being an amazing author!

    Hey,
    Me again (I’m pestering you, aren’t I?)
I was wondering, would people from different countries (UK, New Zealand etc.) be able to audition? Or is it just a one country thing? I’m from New Zealand and I’m scared your going to reject me, (if there even is a movie) in the auditions. I can do an American and British accent, if that helps.

Hi Scully! Until the movie gets approved, they won’t make any decisions about casting or the parameters for any actor they might be looking for. If they do decide, however, I won’t have any role in the casting process. All I’ll be able to do is pass on what I know from the people who are going to decide. I expect that they won’t care where a person lives as long as they seem right for the part. But again, until the movie gets a green light, casting and auditions are all waiting in the background.

I love The Ascendance Trilogy so much! I have read the books several times. I remember how I had waited for ‘The Shadow Throne’ to come out, and it definitely wasn’t easy. I hope that ‘The False Prince’ can become a movie soon. I’ll be waiting 🙂

I really hope your movie will work out! Praying for it! And I can’t wait for the last Mark of a Thief book to come out! I loved both that series and the False Prince series. Both were incredible. I hope to someday publish a book like that-or more. 🙂

Thank you very much, Kari. The way to get published is to decide now that it’s a goal and then never give up on your writing. And yes, I am a Christian.

Hi Claire – from my FAQ page: Where did you get the idea for The Ascendance Trilogy?
Sage came to me in a song by Eddie Vedder (lead singer for Pearl Jam) called “Guaranteed.” The lyrics said, “I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me, guaranteed.” I loved those lines and the more I turned them in my head, the more Sage’s character became clear. And once I had Sage, I had the story.

Hi Carrie! Until a movie is approved, no decision will be made about auditions. But I promise, if the movie gets a green light, it will be my first question to the producers, and I’ll post any info I have on my website. Fingers crossed!

Mid-February, another 2-3 weeks, I’d guess, though of course, the update could be “no news to report.” But I will let everyone know what I know as soon as I hear it.

Hi Jennifer my name is Josie and my English teacher hooked me into the false prince and I’m really really am excited that paramount hasn’t given up on the false prince movie, and if it does get to the point of casting I’d love to play the role of imogen but I haven’t had any experience acting but you know I do look the part and I could be considered for the role and I just would love it if you made like another series like some years later for everyone who wanted more. Hope you have some great times with all of this stuff happening.

Hi Josie! Thank your English teacher for me for keeping you updated. So here’s the deal on movie casting. If the movie is approved, I won’t have any input on who gets cast, BUT one of my first questions to the producers will be how kids can get an audition. I will pass any information that I receive along here on my blog. So fingers crossed for the movie, and for you to get the chance to audition!

I’m a huge fan of the series and I hope that it gets approved. I do however have a completely unrelated question that I figured you could answer. I love the way you wrote the ascendancy triligy, and was wonder if it was possible to write a book in the first person with multiple points of view. And, if so, how would I go about doing that?

The timing of your question is pretty funny, Brianna – I’m attempting to do just that with my next series, launching next winter. So whether it’ll work? Hmm, I hope so! If you have multiple 1st person voices, each voice needs to be very distinct. For example, one uses a ton of slang, maybe another is shy and their sentences often drift off into ellipsis. It’s tricky to make each voice distinct because they all come from you, so treat each character like you were portraying them as an actress on stage. How would you personally portray each character? Make sure each chapter gets only one character viewpoint and put that character’s name at the top of the chapter so the reader always knows whose head they’re in. Good luck!

Did you end up using that major rewrite idea for Traitor’s Game? If so, what part of the book was it? It would be cool to reread it with that in mind.

Yes, I did use it, and it was pretty much the entire concept – about who Kestra is and who Simon is.
