Movie Update…Such As It Is

9780545284141_p0_v2_s260x420Hi all! I know we’ve all been anticipating an August announcement about any movie news, and I wish I had something better to report, but…

Paramount has asked for another six month delay while they continue fine-tuning the script. So the news is, no news.

It is their hope to get the best possible script, since that’s so important for how the overall movie will be. And as fun as it would be to have something to report now, most important is to have a great movie, not just any movie. We’ll now keep our fingers crossed for February 2016 news.

Thanks for all your support and enthusiasm. I hope to have more to report again soon!

I don’t think I can wait another 6 months 🙁 But if it means that there’re higher chances of it being a better movie, I guess it’s worth it. I hope there’ll be better movies news in the future!

Hello, is there any update to a movie? I loved the book. One of my favorites, really. Read it in one sitting after my godfather bought it for me.

Whenever I read books – which is abou ten hours a day😉- I play my music. One song that struck me more than any other songs you guys listed is viva la vida by Coldplay. I don’t know yet if I’m going to watch the movie because I don’t want to see this amazing book turned into anything besides its original glory. I really hope they don’t mess this up. By the way Jennifer your such an amazing author.

I really hope this goes well.

I’m actually a little worried here and am thinking back to what happened to one of my all-time favorite series. The author used to play a minor hand in the film industry, and the series became very popular in his country. Therefore, he was able to get some good people on board. Word is that Spielberg was consulted on the matter and even Johnny Depp was being asked to begin thinking about auditioning for a major role. After years of planning, the results came in.
For some bizarre reason, the yey-whoos in charge thought it would be a good idea to combine the first 3 books, seeing how the series was 9 books (the irony is that Hollywood loves to stretch movies out to get more money. see HP8). This doesn’t work in any sense because the first 3 books each follow different plot lines and separate villains. The 5th and 6th combo could be doable but the rest of them are either on their own plot line or have too much drama to fit into a movie. To make matters worse, there was even a dance number to Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”. There is no dancing in this series. It can get quite dark and gory, and there is NO TIME FOR SINGING! It was so bad that the author even said it was the worst script he’s ever read in his entire life. He has written screenplays. He’s worked for the film industry. That’s a big deal.
What really amazes me is that the series has a lot of marvel influence. The action, the formulas, the outfits, a lot of the character tropes… This could’ve worked in their favor to design it as something like a superhero film. Of course, it’s so much more than that, but the audiences love that stuff, and I’m sure they would appreciate humorous dialogue and fire-throwing! Heck, I can actually compare some of the incidents in this series to some tamer Deadpool moments and goodness knows the following Deadpool has. Even more so, this series could easily be turned into an anime series. I can argue that the characters do fit anime tropes better than live acton ones. A main character and multiple effects would have to be CGI’d, and anything but the BEST would be awful. Anime would solve all the issues.
    The project has been postponed.

Anyways, the point is, I’m terrified that a film will fail to do The False Prince justice. Personally, I think it should be a TV show, but if it’s a movie, so be it. Just let it be awesome, and not suffer the fate of this other series of which I adored.

There’s always a risk when art in one medium (in this case, a novel) is adapted to another (such as a movie). Because each form of art is expressed in a different way, it never adapts perfectly. Some things get better and some are not what we hoped for. I hope if this movie is made, that you will like it.

AHHHHH IM SO EXCITED!!! Im glad they are taking their time, I hope its amazing, and even if it is, it wouldn’t even compare to the amazingness of the book. Really, The False Prince is definitely one of my all time favourite books, and I’ve got high standards. Best of luck for the movie!

Well, now I can add that to the list of things to look forward to in 2016.
    ~16th birthday
    ~Driving
    ~A job
    ~A car
    ~New books
~New Legend of Zelda game (news about it was also moved from 2015 to 2016 for basically the same reason. It must be fate.)
    ~False Prince movie

And the movie will probably be amazing. Sage… er, Jaron… is my favorite book character (third favorite character of all time and media) and I can’t wait to hear his clever thoughts and comments in the movie.

This is honestly one of my favorite books ever (I’m reading the series to my little brother right now) and we both are DYING to hear how the movie is gonna turn out. I’ve been crossing my fingers so long that they’re probably stuck that way.

How long would it take once the script is done and if it’s approved to get to theaters? And if it is made into a movie, is it likely The Runaway King and Shadow Throne be made into movies too?

    • Reply
      August 16, 2015, 4:51 am

The release date will be determined by the studio once it’s approved, which will depend on several factors such as the studio’s movie schedule, any special effects needs (this will probably need few, if any), and other details. So I really don’t know. If the first movie makes enough money, then the other books will be made. If it loses money, breaks even, or is badly reviewed, then it’ll probably stop with the first movie.

    SIX MORE MONTHS!! 🙁 🙁
If it makes a better movie, I guess maybe I can deal with it, but by the time six months are up, I’ll be thirteen!!! 🙁 And if they started filming right away in March, I’d probably be fifteen by the time it was done! (Okay, maybe not.) Fifteen! I’d be the same ago as Jaron!
Okay, I’m going to stop complaining now…
Well, at least it will make it a better movie. 🙂
If they took a month of scriptwriting, a month of filming, and a month of editing, it wouldn’t be very good. Unless they did that by turning back time and working on it for the same months. Then they could spent the equivalent of eight years on it and make an awesome movie in three months.
Someone hurry and invent time travel. 🙂
I know I’m going to watch the movie, although it won’t be as good as the book. (Yeah, I’m that one girl in my class who thinks books are always better than movies.) I was rereading The False Prince the other day and I was trying to imagine what it would be like to be sitting in a movie theatre and watching it happen on a 60 foot screen. I am very excited 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I love Audiomachine, and though I’ve never really connected Ice of Phoenix with The Shadow Throne, now that you mention it, I can totally see how that would work. Excellent suggestion!

I almost always have music associated with my books, though not always trailer music. I do know for Shadow Throne, I was listening to a lot of the soundtrack from Chronicles of Narnia, particularly during the battle scenes.

I think if the movie does go through you need to stay as close to your books as possible. I also think you need someone to play Jaron who can also be Sage, so not a perfect male model but like a young Sean Bean or Viggo Mortensen, someone who looks and acts the part. I really adore this trilogy, and I want it to succeed so badly. Many of the books that I loved flopped as movies because they weren’t half what the books were,(*cough* Percy Jackson *cough*), and I feel that this trilogy should be insanely great movies. I haven’t liked a series this much in years, I have literally read thousands of books and I am really good at predicting endings, but you tricked me in your first book and made me fall in love with it as I would like to do with the movie adaptation. So thank you for a great trilogy and here is to the hope of seeing a great movie come to life!

Would the person cast as Sage/Jaron have to be naturally left handed? It seems like it’d be really hard to do anything with your non dominant hand and make it convincing

That’s an interesting question, Madison. I think with tricks of movie making, they can make it appear a right-handed Jaron has a dominant left hand. Technically, Jaron is probably ambidextrous – not naturally, but because he was forced to train with his right.

Hi Sami! The last plan I heard was to hold open auditions with actors from outside Hollywood. I don’t know if that’s still the plan, but I hope it is. If the movie goes forward, then I’ll post information on my website for how to audition. Look for the next update in February!

The tv show Reign really reminded me of the book. The actors were all perfect too lol, but clearly it wouldn’t be as much of a movie if they used the exact same people, they could switch it up a little bit. Lord nacise (however u spell it) would be a PERFECT Bevin Conner. I read the book a loooong while ago lol.

Hi! I just finished reading the books and I need to say… These are the best books I ever read. I don’t think any other story will out top the Ascendant Trilogy. It’s my favorite so far and I want to keep it that way. I came here looking for news about a movie but I got a suprise where the actual author answer, which is awesome. Anyways I really hope to have a movie and I can’t wait for it, but I also think if waiting will give us the perfect adaptation, then so be it. Thank you for anwering.

Ps. By the way, Sage/Jaron is a cutie.

Honestly, I still remember that one day when I saw that on the Rebecca Caudill Nominees shelf, The False Prince. I thought it sounded extremely cool, so I decided to read it. I finished in about 3 hours. I loved it. Now, I am participating in a book competition and one of the books is another one of J. A. Nielsen’s. It’s A Night Divided. Honestly, I think JA Nielsen is one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait for this movie to start filming.

This is not a bother, Erica. I always loved to write, but it took me a long time to understand that it was a career choice that an everyday person could make. Once I got there, and knew I wanted to be published, I never anticipated the kind of reaction that I’ve had so far in my career. And no, I think I’m an average writer trying hard every day to get better.

I went to the last tween author boot camp and you were one of the speakers. You were amazing and I wish I had read more than one book then. When I read the False Prince and The Runaway King, you had signed it and wrote a message in it about the book. In The False Prince you wrote, “Fight the Good Fight,” and in The Runaway King you wrote, “Never, never, give up.” What would you have written in The Shadow Throne?

Hi Essie. The signature for the third book is “Face the Wind.” It references that when you find hard things in life, you have to face them and not turn away from the hard thing.

          Hi Essie,

I always divide chapters as I’m writing. Each chapter becomes a scene in itself, with its own open, climax, and fall, and I always like to leave with a hook that pushes the reader into the next chapter. So that means I’ve got to know where my chapters are from the very first draft.

I won 1st place in the writing contest, and I really appreciate your books! All of them are my favorite books of all time (and NOTHING beats Chronicles Of Narnia)!!! I am so excited that I got to meet my favorite author, and actually get my book signed! Keep up the good work 🙂

    Hi Jennifer!
Sorry to bug you again 🙂
I just finished The Shadow Throne yesterday, and I wanted to know a couple of things:
    1. Why is there a broken key for the cover?
    2. How do you picture Amarinda, Imogen, Jaron, Roden, Tobias, and Fink? (sorry such a long list!)
    Thanks!

    • Reply
      April 18, 2017, 4:17 am

Hi Hannah! The reason for the broken items on the covers is because it’s a broken kingdom and they are looking for the person who can bring the country together again. As far as how I picture the characters, the details given in the books are as much as I give on them. The rest I leave to the readers’ imaginations, which is far more valuable.

Hi Chelsea, if you’re really, truly stuck then just write “Something amazing happens here” and skip to the next chapter or scene. If you want to work through it, then start with the highlights of what you do know – the major scene events, then fill in a few details you do know, then gradually add more and more until it starts to pull together into a scene or an outline that makes sense to you. But no worries – this is super common for all writers. You work through it and then you’re off and running again!

          • August 8, 2017, 7:43 pm

I am writing a book called Hades’ Child, and I was wondering if you have any tips for writing mythological fiction. I got a lot of books from my local library to study up on mythology.
By the way, I just finished Mark Of The Thief and I loved it!!!!

    • Reply
      August 9, 2017, 4:07 am

Thanks Hannah. For mythological fiction, you need to determine what you will borrow from existing myth, and what you are creating uniquely of your own. It needs to be a bit of both. Then combine them for something that is uniquely you!

    • Reply
      August 9, 2017, 2:11 pm

Thank you, Hannah. The trick is to study the mythology that currently exists and then figure out what you want to add to it with your story so that it all weaves in seamlessly together. Figure that out and you will have something that is uniquely yours! Good luck!

          • August 17, 2017, 3:43 am

It’s me again, and I’ve gotten my feelings hurt again by a person I’ve thought was my friend. The person I want to talk to I lost there number and the last time that happened was at Youth Camp. That friend I want to talk to gave me a hug when I needed one. I don’t have very many good friends right now, I do but some I lost there numbers. It feels like Jaron does when Roden betrayed him or when he sent Imogene away. It really stinks.

That stinks, and yeah, Jaron would understand. It’s hard when friends don’t act like friends, but what they say and do is about them and what they’re going through. It isn’t about you. And as Jaron would do, make the best of it so that good things and opportunities can come from things that don’t seem good at the time.

Hi Luke – Paramount is no longer attached to the movie, but a production company is still pursuing it as a project. So the current status is a bit undetermined but I have high hopes. My thoughts are that I want a movie made *if* it is done well and stays true to the book. So keep your fingers crossed!
